Actor Rob Carlton’s work takes him all over the country but he says there really is
no place like home.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LIVING IN AVOCA?
Firstly, I’d have to say the people. Avoca Beach has a village atmosphere in which my family feels safe and at home. So I love that my kids are growing up as part of a community. For me, it’s being able to utilise all of the incredible natural resources we have on our doorstep. I love surfing and mountain biking so with the beach on one side and mountains on the other I’m spoilt for choice.
WHERE ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SPOTS?
Avoca and Copacabana. Not only are they both absolutely stunning to look at they’re great surf beaches. I’m looking out at Copa beach now and I can see whales going past – it’s incredible! I also love mountain biking at Kincumba Mountain and I’ll often do the Macmasters trail right up to Killcare and Box Head. So yeah, not only good for exercise, spending time in these places feels good for my soul.
DESCRIBE THE LIFESTYLE ON THE CENTRAL COAST
I’d describe the lifestyle here as relaxed and cruisey. For me, with the work that I do, it’s really important that I’m able to go down to the shops in a pair of trackies and ugg boots without getting hassled. My professional life is very busy and requires me to talk to a lot of people so when I’m home I like switching off and I can do that here. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not a hermit. I do go out!
YOUR PERFECT WEEKEND?
Walking our dogs on Avoca Beach or around Avoca Lagoon. A good café. Watching my boys play sport. A surf or a bike ride. Good food. A BBQ on our deck with friends. A rugby game – either going or watching.
WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO TAKE VISITORS?
Because we live in such a beautiful part of the world we always have visitors! To be honest, we don’t venture too far from Avoca when friends come to stay. We generally hang around home and catch up, walk to the beach, swim and maybe go see Mick about hiring a paddle boat to get around Avoca lagoon. Oh, and if the markets are on at Avoca everyone’s happy.
THE CENTRAL COAST’S BEST KEPT SECRET?
Well everyone knows we’ve got beautiful beaches. A lot of great places to eat have popped up over the last few years that people don’t know about. I think the Central Coast has the potential to be a great foodie destination. My wife and I have been making an effort to try new places when we can.
WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU MISS ABOUT HOME WHEN
Apart from my wife and kids, I miss the smell of this place. That saltiness in the air is something that always makes me feel at home.
