Visit Kyal and Kara from The Block at home

The paint barely dry on their Albert Park auction apartment, young Coastie couple Kyal and Kara Demmrich from The Block Fans V Faves, are very happy to be back on their home turf after a pretty intense six months with Channel 9’s popular reality renovation show.

“It’s all been a bit of a whirlwind to be honest. A fantastic experience, so much fun and it’s opened up a lot of new opportunities for us to do what we love.
But we haven’t really stopped – we haven’t even had time for a holiday yet!”

Fondly branded the ‘Super K’s’ after winning an impressive five out of six styling challenges and reaching a staggering $2.4m auction price, Kyal and Kara are setting their sights on the next challenge; establishing their new home and commercial construction and design company, Diverse Design & Construct.

“We are really excited about the projects we have coming up. One we are working on is a bathroom redesign, and they have left it completely in our hands to style. They have put a lot of trust in us!”

Gaining top marks for their bathroom reveal on The Block and outstanding feedback from the judges probably helped their client to have full confidence in this dynamic duo’s work. And you only need to take a quick look around their impressive Killarney Vale home to know that this couple can really walk their talk.

Bought in 2008, the 95sqm three bedroom cottage was in need of some TLC and the couple spent a few years planning what they wanted to do with it. Saving up and doing upgrades to the property when they could, they have transformed the once modest block into a 300sqm showcase of their best work. A carpenter by trade, Kyal’s input can be seen everywhere from the striking triple light feature over the dining table (made from the old garden fence) to the oversize mirror in the kitchen (the first thing Kyal made for Kara when he was just 17).

Kara’s characteristic blending of contemporary and vintage features brings an intimate feel to the open-plan, four bedroom home. A calm layering of neutrals and natural finishes, combined with quirky touches, give warmth and character.

Unsurprisingly, it’s the bathrooms where this couple’s sense of style comes to life; modern charcoal tiling, a square edged tub and pristine chrome fittings form the backdrop, while the feature piece of the room is the vanity unit – an old wooden dresser picked up from an antique shop in Newcastle.

Proving that it’s not always about how much you spend to achieve a tasteful renovation, the couple’s home contains many family hand-me-down pieces, including the heirloom piano and wooden dining chairs. Usually the most expensive room in the house, the kitchen, came free from a job Kyal was working on at the time.

“We were ripping the kitchen out and it was in pretty good condition so the owner was happy for me to make use out of it. It’s amazing the difference new doors can make to a kitchen.”

Bringing in natural light was a big factor in the planning of their home, and something that they recommend anyone thinking of renovating pay close attention to. Entering the front door of the couple’s home, you are immediately drawn through the house to the expansive living-dining-kitchen area which opens up seamlessly onto the outdoor dining area.

Not that they have had much time for entertaining since their recent rise to fame. Three months of filming The Block, followed by three months of publicity and appearances have meant the couple have barely spent a full week at home since the April auction. Something their seven-year-old kelpie, Jonah isn’t very impressed with! But with his owners in full planning mode for the launch of their new business, Jonah should be seeing a lot more of them.

“You get the full package with Diverse. Whether you just want some inspiration in the early days of your reno, or full scale design and project management, we will work with you to create a beautiful, one-off space.”Hoping to take on residential as well as commercial projects, Kyal and Kara will bring their individual skills and talents to transform spaces and homes according to their client’s requirements and lifestyle. Kyal’s skilled carpentry and Kara’s meticulous planning and sense of style will be accompanied by a trusted team of experts. The couple are excited about what the future holds for their work. From one off custom-designed pieces, to full-scale planning and renovation work on homes, offices, bars and public spaces, the Super Ks are wasting no time in making their dreams become a reality.
